Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) and Dr. Abbot (Shawn Hatosy) in The Pitt season 2, episode 9

The Pitt season 3 might not have a release date yet, but a new update from one of its stars suggests HBO Max already has a pretty solid plan in place. The medical drama has quickly become one of the standout shows on HBO Max, thanks to its real-time format and intense, high-stakes hospital setting.

Following the success of season 1, The Pitt returned with season 2, which continues to explore the chaos of a single shift inside a Pittsburgh trauma center, this time over the 4th of July weekend. Now, in an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns, The Pitt star Taylor Dearden is shedding some light on what the timeline for season 3 could look like. The actor explained that the team has always wanted to maintain a consistent schedule for writing, filming, and releasing each season. While she made it clear that nothing is official yet, the goal seems to be to stick to a similar rollout pattern as the previous seasons. Read her comments below: Well, we knew to start with that they always liked to keep it the same. So, after the first season, before we got the call, it was like,"So when do you guys think we'd shoot for if we got it?" And they said,"We want to make it a thing of this is when we write it, this is when we shoot it, this is when it comes out" So, it would be the same-ish timeline. Luckily, we got the word while we were shooting still, so to give the writers more time would be great. They started the first season with every episode completely written before we were cast, and the second season they were writing while we were filming. So, it's a totally different . But I can guarantee, as a very immature writer myself, more time is always really, really nice. Dearden emphasized that the cast is unaware of the timeline and opened up about the uncertainty surrounding it and the characters' futures, especially given the nature of the setting and the constantly shifting character dynamics. See her comments below: But yeah, we have no idea. We have no idea if it's the next day, if it's weeks, if it's months, we don't know. We're all always kind of scared, because you kind of graduate out of this."Once you're a fourth year, you have to get a fellowship or something else to stay, or a huge job promotion," which would probably mean another actor going. It's tough and it is very nerve-wracking, but we're all very hopeful. As Dearden mentioned, the shift in creative timelines is also worth noting. The Pitt season 1 had every episode fully written before filming even began, while season 2 was being written during production. That shift clearly changed the experience behind the scenes, and her comments suggest that giving the writers more time going into season 3 would be a major priority. For a show like The Pitt, which relies heavily on fast pacing and overlapping storylines, that kind of extra time could make a big difference. The series thrives on how it balances multiple storylines at once, unfolding simultaneously over the course of a single shift, which makes the writing process especially demanding compared to more traditional dramas. Because The Pitt is set in a teaching hospital, characters can, and will, naturally move on as they advance in their careers, whether that means fellowships, promotions, or leaving the hospital altogether. This structure means no one is ever fully guaranteed to stay, adding an extra layer of unpredictability for both the cast and the audience as new seasons approach. Still, the fact that season 3 was renewed while season 2 was still in production already puts the show in a strong position compared to many streaming series, which often face long and uncertain gaps between seasons. It shows that HBO Max clearly sees The Pitt as a long-term player, and it’s treating it that way. Season 2 of The Pitt is still going on, with a new episode arriving on April 2, and it has already managed to surpass season 1's rankings with an outstanding 99% critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes. At the same time, it continues to deepen its characters, balancing intense medical cases with personal arcs, proving why The Pitt remains one of HBO Max’s most compelling and consistently engaging dramas.
