One of the most successful director-actor partnerships of recent times is evolving under our noses. Christopher Nolan and Matt Damon are preparing to deliver arguably their biggest movie yet, The Odyssey.
But they've already done two projects together, both of which had a massive impact on popular culture. Their second movie was Oppenheimer, which finally won Nolan the coveted Best Picture and Best Director Oscars. Damon was acclaimed for his supporting performance as Leslie Groves in the movie, although his co-stars Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. were the ones who walked away with Oscars. Damon first worked with Nolan on one of the filmmaker's most beloved movies, which is now docking on a new streamer. The movie in question is Interstellar, of course. Released in 2014, it follows an Air Force pilot who is pulled into a high-stakes mission to locate a habitable new planet for humankind after Earth becomes too toxic to live on. Headlined by Matthew McConaughey, Interstellar featured Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, and John Lithgow. Damon appeared in an extended cameo as a Colonel Kurtz-type figure named Dr. Mann. Interstellar received mostly positive reviews for its visuals and scientific accuracy, although some critics found it lacking in emotion. The film's total worldwide haul now stands at $773 million thanks to a hugely successful re-release last year. It holds a"Certified Fresh" 73% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads,"Interstellar represents more of the thrilling, thought-provoking, and visually resplendent filmmaking moviegoers have come to expect from writer-director Christopher Nolan, even if its intellectual reach somewhat exceeds its grasp." Nolan went on to make an even more divisive sci-fi epic, Tenet, which underperformed commercially owing to the pandemic in 2020.
