Meet the collector who stores her Issey Miyake collection in her couch.
Arianna Aviram, a 28-year-old New York–based merchandiser, is internet famous. Well, niche internet famous, specifically within the archival-fashion world. She cuts a striking figure, resembling a Pre-Raphaelite beauty with delicate but severe features and a head of orange waves that reach her chest and blunt Bettie Page bangs. She’s always dressed exclusively in larger-than-life clothes by a Japanese designer from her extensive archive.
The community in which Aviram has become a bit of a legend is the small but vibrant universe dedicated to Japanese designers. As it says in her Instagram bio—under the handle, she has a modest but dedicated following of 2,500—Aviram prefers Undercover, Comme des Garçons, and Junya Watanabe. In addition to her personal Instagram page, she has a separate page dedicated to her finds, titled
, a trove of everything from her beloved Japanese designers to labels like Hood by Air, Chopova Lowena, and Prada._______djm But it was the Belgian designer Martin Margiela who launched her collecting obsession. In 2013, she visited Soho’s Ina, where she found a viscose dress from the designer’s spring 2004 collection. “Although I can’t remember the price of the dress, I knew that I had to have it,” Aviram recalls.
Aviram’s obsession began in high school, when she was influenced by a bevy of musicians and bands from Serge Gainsbourg to Jefferson Airplane, Dum Dum Girls, Sonic Youth, and Meiko Kaji. She often tried to recreate each’s style by trawling the Melrose flea market, eBay, and Etsy. “Once I moved to New York, my style completely changed and I was shocked to find you could buy vintage designer clothes at the same prices as true vintage,” she says.
