Kimiko and Annie standing outside a cabin.
Summary As fans prepare for The Boys' fifth and final season, stars Erin Moriarty and Karen Fukuhara talk with Collider's Steve Weintraub about some of the season's biggest shifts, including Kimiko's newfound voice to Starlight's confronting her trauma head-on.
This season, no one is safe from Homelander's supersized ego. Following the Season 4 finale, Hughie , Mother's Milk , and Frenchie are on their way to a"Freedom Camp," while Annie is struggling to lead the resistance against Homelander's growing army of Supes. Meanwhile, Butcher is locked and loaded with a vendetta and a Supe-killing virus that could change the course of history forever. Watch the full conversation in the video above, or read the transcript below, where Fukuhara and Moriarty tease the endgame episode they can't wait for fans to watch, plus tease what to expect from their characters' storylines. Fukuhara also talks about her next project, The Rookie: North, and why she's excited about joining this new ensemble. Kimiko Feels Like Playing a “Whole New Personality” in Season 5 “It was a challenge to find the character again.” COLLIDER: I said this in Brazil, and I'll say it to both of you again: Thank you so much for your work on this series. I love this show so much, and I'm both so excited to see where it goes and also so sad that it's over.I've been asking this question of everyone: Have you ever asked for someone's autograph?FUKUHARA: No, but Tomer , who plays Frenchie, has forcefully given his to me at a con.FUKUHARA: He was like, “Do you want my autograph?” And I was like, “No, I think I’m…” and he's like, “Here. I drew something for you.”Karen, when did you realize you were going to be talking this season? When did you find out, and what was it like for you? Because it's a whole new show for you. FUKUHARA: It is! I read the script, and that's how I found out. Kripke was telling me. He told me beforehand that she would be talking, but I didn't know how much. I didn't realize that she would be so chatty. It was a challenge to find the character again because it's kind of like finding a whole new personality, if you will. It was a new challenge that I had to embark on this season. Starlight’s Season 5 Story Is “Surprising” but Fully Earned Fukuhara and Moriarty also tease which “insane” episode they can’t wait for. For both of you, what do you want to tease about your journeys this season? MORIARTY: Just for Starlight’s journey, I would say that it's going to be surprising in a way that's not arbitrary, but earned, and I think it's really cool and hard to achieve that. I think that she has tried to metabolize her trauma in so many different ways. The coping mechanisms that she's utilized to try and deal with the trauma that she's been through have been plenty, but this new season is getting involved in a new coping mechanism to try and deal with the trauma that she's been through and the coping mechanisms we usually employ to deal with trauma, as opposed to integrating them into who we are, don't often work. So it's a matter of, what is that coping mechanism? Does it work? And is she able to find herself again? FUKUHARA: For Kimiko, you'll find a new side to her where she's able to connect with some of the other characters that she wasn't able to in the past because of her inability to speak, and that creates a different dynamic between her and Frenchie, as well. So, stay tuned for that. The final season is eight episodes. Which is the one that you are really most excited for fans to see?By the way, every person I've spoken to in the cast has said eight, which just tells me this is going to be a brutal, brutal episode.FUKUHARA: I remember thinking, I was reading the script and I was wondering how they were going to pack all of that in — “How will we ever find the time to pack it into one episode?” — and they did it. I'm not talking to Eric today, but is it an extended episode? Do you know? Was it like a 60-page script?FUKUHARA: I actually don't know at all. MORIARTY: I do know the answer to your question, but I don't think we're allowed to answer. I'm getting no from Amazon. The cybers will get us if I answer that. So, you’ll have to wait and find out. Sure. I have a feeling it'll be a longer episode, but that's just me. I'm going to throw that out there. Karen Fukuhara Just Finished Filming ‘The Rookie’ Spin-Off “I just got back from shooting the pilot.” Karen, I definitely have an individual for you. I could be wrong, but I think you're on this Rookie spin-off show, .What can you tease about it? I know The Rookie is incredibly popular, so congrats on booking it. FUKUHARA: Thank you so much. Thank you for that. I just got back from shooting the pilot in Vancouver for The Rookie: North. It's a spin-off of a show called The Rookie. The original is led by Nathan Fillion, and he's been a friend of mine for years. He's just a wonderful human being. He's so kind-hearted, so I knew stepping into this project, I was in good hands, because everything trickles down from the number one. How they conduct a set is going to be how the vibe of the crew is going to be. It's really important to have a good number one, and we have Jay Ellis, who is at the forefront of it all. I really hope we get picked up. We find out at the end of April, beginning of May. So, I might be a Canadian again.I have confidence that one could go, especially with the popularity of The Rookie. Posts 16 By Erin Konrad For both of you, The Boys has done so many outrageous things over the first four seasons, and I'm sure more in Season 5. What are the one or two things that you still cannot believe aired on Prime Video?FUKUHARA: I feel like they would have been. I don't know, I'm guessing. All the exploding penises.FUKUHARA: Oh my gosh, she went through that dungeon, and I'm glad that was not me.
