The Virgo Integral helmet is special because the higher tier version offers Mips technology, but my unit does not have it.I have been a vocal advocate in recent years — both in my personal and professional life — of the “urbanist” lifestyle, meaning I believe cities should be dense and walkable, with ample options of getting around, ranging from public transport to micromobility vehicles like bicycles or scooters.
And so I have refused to own a car in Los Angeles, even though I spend 4-5 months of the year there. Fortunately, my mother with whom I stay lives near downtown LA, so I have been able to get around via buses, trains and anI had been riding that powerful scooter at up to 25 miles per hour around LA with just a conventional bicycle helmet, which I knew was not ideal. But wearing a motorcycle helmet also felt like overkill.
And so when a French company named The Beam reached out asking if I want to test its new helmet that was designed specifically for electric scooters and bicycles, I jumped at the chance.Named the Virgo Integral, the helmet is designed to be a mix of bicycle helmets which only protect the top of the head and motorycle helmets which cover the entire head.
Since the helmet goes over the entire head, size and fit is more crucial than a conventional helmet, and to that end, The Beam designed three sizes that should fit most head shapes. I chose the large size, which weighs around 650g, and it was a comfortable fit, just snug enough but not loose. There are thick cushion pads inside that press onto my lower cheeks, but I found the clamp force to be manageable and not uncomfortable.
I have, fortunately, not crashed or fallen during my week of testing the helmet , but I definitely feel safer in the Virgo than my conventional bike helmet., is only the lower tier option. There is a version of this helmet with the patented Mips technology, which is basically an extra inner helmet layer that reduces rotational force on impact. This system has apparently been studied and patented to better protect the human brain.
