Nature, the international weekly journal of science, is seeking a talented individual to join our team as an Associate/Senior Editor to champion research in social sciences, specifically in the fields of education, communication, political science, sociology, and public policy.
In this position, you will be soliciting primary research content in areas of strategic priority, handling the editorial assessment and peer-review of these manuscripts in collaboration with your team manager, organizing events and engaging with the scientific community in conferences and site visits, and spearheading growth in societally-relevant content and the social sciences. The position is offered on a full-time, permanent basis , and will preferably be located in either our New York or Berlin office, although requests for possible placement in one of the other Nature editorial offices will also be considered and internal candidates – should they be successful – could stay in their current location.Do you love science but feel that a research career isn’t enough to sate your desire to learn more and have a positive and meaningful impact on policy and science? Nature, the international weekly journal of science, is looking for an Editor to join a team dedicated to publishing the world’s best original research across the physical, life, clinical and social sciences. The ideal candidate will have a strong research background in any sub-discipline within the broad research areas covering societally relevant work in the social sciences, such as education, communication, public policy, sociology, and political science, among others. The successful candidate will play a key role in expanding our content in the social sciences, and should be keen in interacting with scientists engaged in policy to champion our societally-relevant content.Research experience to PhD level in a relevant research discipline — ideally with a strong, applied and societally-relevant research goals, and preferably with some post-doctoral, industry, or policy experience. A passion for science and a thirst to learn more. You must be able to demonstrate the breadth of your interest in scientific research, both within and beyond your specialty. A vision of the way in which Nature can strategically expand into the social sciences and become known for publishing societally-relevant work that can potentially impact policies. The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different areas of this discipline. Be eager to interact with scientists worldwide, learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish. A collaborative spirit: you will be working in a team setting, striving to support and mentor others, and to maximize our collective success. Flexibility: be comfortable with working in a fast-paced environment and understanding that our priorities may change with the evolution of medical research and what’s happening in the world. Outstanding organization and time management skills; being able to set priorities for yourself and for others, and to adapt quickly to change.The successful candidate will report to the relevant Team Manager, Mary Elizabeth Sutherland, but as this is an interdisciplinary role, they will also work closely with editorial colleagues from across the editorial team. They will be expected to play an important role in influencing the representation of their fields in the journal as a whole. They will handle original research papers and review material: the ability to offer well-reasoned and timely editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts in the light of expert advice is crucial. They will liaise extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature family and experts in the international research community. Editorial experience is not required, although applicants with significant editorial experience are encouraged to apply and will potentially be considered for a Senior Editor position.-A list of 5-10 published articles or preprints from the last year from fields in the social sciences that you would have selected editorially to grow’s publications in the social sciences. For each article, please provide the full reference and link to the paper, together with a brief rationale for your choice. -A concise 700-1000 word piece discussing emerging areas of research in the social sciences that you feel are particularly societally and policy relevant.US Annualized Base Salary Range: Associate Editor: $74,000 | Senior Editor: $91,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity.
