Texas Rangers in touch with veteran Robbie Grossman, considering adding a left fielder
have indicated the team would strongly consider a platoon situation in left to start the year. It may also consider a platoon at DH.
There are nine legitimate outfield candidates already in camp, though five of them are left-handed hitters: Brad Miller, Josh Smith, Travis Jankowski, Joe McCarthy and Yoshi Tsutsugo. The right-handed options — Bubba Thompson, Ezequiel Duran, Clint Frazier and Mark Mathias — have less experience. Duran is still learning the outfield. Mathias is more of an infielder.
Adding Grossman could also make it easier for the Rangers to then carry a third catcher, allowing right-handed hitting Mitch Garver to DH more often. He could be paired with Miller in a platoon. The Rangers also have some flexibility on their 40-man roster. Though it is currently full, they are expected to put reliever Brett Martin on the 60-day IL. Martin will miss the entire season after undergoing shoulder surgery.
