Rangers hold Jacob deGrom out of first spring workout with left side tightness
DeGrom felt some tightness in his left side during his most recent bullpen session, his sixth of the offseason. The Rangers considered his long injury history and their $185 million investment and also noted it was 34 degrees around the time the team was supposed to take the field. There were some small chunks of still-frozen hail from an overnight storm strewn around the Surprise Recreational Campus. And, thus, was the decision made to hold deGrom out.Nothing major. A precaution.
First, about deGrom: Everything seems to suggest it’s not a serious injury. While he didn’t speak in any official capacity on Wednesday, he did give general indication he would be fine. He will hold a media briefing Thursday. Also, it’s prudent to be cautious.said. “In 25 years of managing, we’ve done this a ton. He could have gone out there and thrown. I get it, it’s Jacob deGrom and it’s going to raise some eyebrows, but not with us.
On one wall of the clubhouse, the Rangers had eight lockers lined up one next to the other that summed up this team’s biggest potential strength and its potential downfall. DeGrom made 26 total starts over the last two seasons. In 2021, elbow inflammation sent him to the 60-day IL. Last year, it was a stress reaction in his scapula that surfaced during spring training. Next thing you knew, it was August before he was making his debut. It was a story almost every day in New York because, well, it’s New York and because, when healthy, deGrom is the best pitcher on the planet.
