Over 1,000 episodes after its last proper spot on Ash's team, Squirtle and its Squirtle Squad are finally back, this time dressed like never before. 😎
Warning: Spoilers for Pokémon: Aim to Be A Master, episode 5Fans of Pokémon's original series were no doubt thrilled to see Ash's Squirtle and the Squirtle Squad return in the most recent episode of Pokémon: Aim to Be A Master--even if they were sporting a new Power Rangers-esque look for most of it.
The Squirtle Squad has made their return to the Pokémon anime not just as firefighters, but performers, putting on a Power Rangers-inspired stage show for the children of the city . The Squirtle Squad donned colorful outfits and defeated the stage show's villains , and Ash and friends were able to arrive in time to see the show. Squirtle's reaction to spotting Ash in the audience is adorable, but things soon go awry when Ash, Brock, and Misty try to say hi after the show.
When Ash originally found his Squirtle, it was the leader of a gang of Squirtle who caused trouble, but Ash helped them to use their powers for good as firefighters. While Ash's Squirtle went with him, the others remained behind to fight fires. Ash's Squirtle would eventually rejoin the squad and has been there ever since, barring a brief return in Ruby & Sapphire and a cameo appearance in Sun & Moon.
As Squirtle was one of the most iconic members of Ash's original team, seeing the Squirtle Squad again is a fun callback for anyone who can remember Squirtle's debut over 20 years ago. The new Pokémon: Aim to Be a Master episode very much feels like a classic series episode from that era, with its Team Rocket shenanigans and focus on Kanto, and is sure to please fans who've missed Squirtle over all this time, even if the squad does take inspiration from the Power Rangers.
