More than a quarter of Texas workers make less than $17 an hour as the cost of living continues to climb, according to a new study advocating for higher wages nationwide. New data from Oxfam , a global nonprofit working toward income equality, reveals 30% of the state’s workforce — or over 4.5 million residents — are considered low-wage workers compared to the 23% national average.

In Texas, 40% of Hispanic/Latino and 34% of Black workers are considered low-wage compared to 28% of white workers. Texas women have more low-paying jobs than men, with 36% compared to 25%, the study says.
