Ex-San Antonio military brat Jarrod Forthman of Animal World & Snake Farm Zoo in New Braunfels saw the diamondback watersnake on the San Marcos River.
When Jarrod Forthman went tubing with his fiancée in the San Marcos River , he wasn't expecting to wrangle and relocate a snake with his bare hands. But after seeing a gaggle of grown men throw sticks and rocks at a nonvenomous diamondback watersnake last summer, that's exactly what he did. The veteran handler and deputy director at Animal World and Snake Farm Zoo in New Braunfels said he knew immediately that the snake was harmless.

In the video, Forthman plucks the snake, which stretches over half his body length, out of the water and carries it to shore — all while the snake tries to sink its teeth into his rescuer. The video, filmed and posted to TikTok on July 4, 2023, recently grabbed the spotlight when news outlets aired it.
