Talking politics at work can be a "double-edged sword," but a lot of Americans are doing it anyway, according toThe breakdown published Thursday is based on survey data collected earlier this year, which found 45% of workers have had recent political discussions with their colleagues.
Gallup estimates that a lack of employee engagement costs the U.S. economy $1.9 trillion in lost productivity. The new analysis of political discussions at work found 38% of all employees said they’ve overheard coworkers talking about politics.But Gallup also found such talk makes 14% of workers feel included. And 11% said they grew closer to a colleague because of their political views.Industries with conservative-leaning employees are more likely than those in industries with liberal-leaning employees to report having political discussions.
