The Taliban announced they engaged in discussions regarding the normalization of relations between Afghanistan and the United States during a meeting with officials from the Trump administration on Saturday. The White House, however, did not issue a public statement detailing the meeting or provide an immediate response to requests for comment.
According to a statement released by the Taliban, Amir Khan Muttaqi, the regime's foreign minister, met with Adam Boehler, President Donald Trump's special envoy for hostage response, and Zalmay Khalilzad, another U.S. envoy. The Taliban disseminated photographs from their deliberations. 'Comprehensive discussions were held on ways to develop bilateral relations between the two countries, issues related to citizens, and investment opportunities in Afghanistan,' the statement declared.The statement continued, asserting that the U.S. delegation extended condolences regarding the devastating earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan late last month. This meeting follows the Taliban's release of U.S. citizen George Glezmann, who was abducted while traversing Afghanistan as a tourist. Glezmann's release marks the third detainee freed by the Taliban since Trump assumed office. It also occurs after the Taliban issued sharp criticism of Trump's newly implemented travel ban, which restricts Afghans from entering the United States
