Also in this week’s Independence Police blotter, police help a man get his car out of a snow bank then cite him for open container.

A driver was pulled over at 11:09 p.m. Jan. 1 for failing to stop while crossing a sidewalk. He was reportedly uncooperative during the stop and fled from the scene. Police pursued the man until he abandoned the car in a restaurant parking lot and continued to flee on foot, running into and out of the restaurant.

He was apprehended and a loaded handgun was found inside his vehicle. The man had multiple previous weapons related felony convictions, and he was arrested and charged with weapons under disability, driving without a license and failing to stop at a sidewalk. He also refused to submit to field sobriety or breath tests and was taken to jail.Police responded to a possible domestic incident at a hotel at 12:09 a.m. Jan. 1. When they arrived, officers observed a man running up and down the street screaming. He was reportedly verbally abusive and uncooperative with officers when they questioned him. Another man arrived and said the first man was his friend and they were trying to free a vehicle from a snow bank. Police assisted the men with removing the vehicle, and numerous open containers of alcohol were found at the scene. The driver was told not to drive the vehicle and police took the vehicle keys for the night. The driver was cited for open container and the first man encountered was cited for disorderly conduct.A driver was pulled over for a traffic offense and having excessive window tint at 3:35 a.m. Jan. 1. Both the driver and his passenger were seen not wearing seatbelts, and a handgun and an open bottle of alcohol were seen inside the car during the stop. The driver admitted the handgun was his and he was cited for weapons under disability due to previous felony convictions.A driver was pulled over at 2:53 a.m. Jan. 9 for driving too slowly on Interstate 480 eastbound. He appeared impaired during the stop, failed field sobriety tests and refused to submit to a breath test. He was cited for operating a motor vehicle impaired and driving outside marked lanes and was released after posting a cash bond.Brian Lisik was on staff at Sun News for 12 years.
