GOPENG: The need for an alarm system to warn villagers of rising water levels along Sungai Dipang here will be looked into, says Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin.
The Perak infrastructure, energy, water and public transportation committee chairman said that they are now conducting a study and collecting feedback from villagers in the area on the matter.
“The Orang Asli Development Department is currently meeting with the Orang Asli at Pos Dipang to see the need to place an alarm system at the river. “As for now, the state government has paused all activities and projects near the river to prevent any unnecessary incidents,” he told reporters after officiating the Chinese New Year Ops Bersepadu at the RTC Gopeng here on Thursday .
On Jan 12 84 villagers from Kampung Sahom, Kampar were forced to evacuate their homes after a flash flood hit their village.The Star had on Jan 17 reported that villagers from Pos Dipang had hoped for an alarm system to be placed at the river to alert them of rising water levels. In 1996, a landslide at the Pos Dipang Orang Asli village swept away about 30 houses, killing about 40 people.
