Severe thunderstorms and hail swept through Central Ohio Sunday evening, leaving behind widespread power outages and school cancellations.

Students at Briggs High School had an unexpected extended weekend after a pipe burst inside the building, forcing classes to be canceled. South High School also closed on Monday after officials with Columbus City Schools said the building was without power.

The storms brought heavy hail across much of the region, and with dropping temperatures, the hail pebbles lingered well into Monday.“For whatever reason, this area right here has constant outages. I don’t know why. It never fails,” one resident said. Power outages also created hazardous conditions on the roads. On Columbus’s west side, police directed traffic at the intersection of Broad and Central streets after traffic lights went dark. Drivers treated the intersection as a four-way stop, as required during outages. Lightning strikes caused additional damage. At East Market, the Railhouse Bar caught fire after being struck. Management confirmed the building sustained damage, but expects to reopen by the end of the week. East Market itself remains open during regular hours. "The roof was struck around 11:15 last night while it was open for business," explained James Ball with Railhouse Bar. "The market area was closed at that time. Columbus Fire responded quickly and did an excellent job putting the fire out. Luckily, nobody was hurt, and the market area did not suffer any damages." Across Central Ohio, dozens of neighborhoods experienced outages. Some residents relied on generators to keep their homes powered, while areas in south Columbus faced longer restoration times. Businesses were also impacted. A Kroger store on Sawmill Road dealt with a burst roof drainpipe caused by the storm. The issue has since been repaired, and the store is open after cleanup efforts, with any affected groceries thrown away, according to Kroger. As of Monday evening, most power has been restored, according to AEP, though some outages persist in pockets of east and west Columbus.
