Steve Borthwick’s form-led England squad lays bare the contrasts to Eddie Jones 🔎 Analysis by hughgodwin_
, and the lines of demarcation from the seven-year reign of Jones are immediately well defined.
Borthwick is no one’s idea of a rugby Chuckle Brother, but on Monday at Twickenham he continued to peel off layers of his previously impenetrable veneer with tales of Marcus Smith flicking through self-improvement notes on his iPad, and Owen Farrell’s impressive presence from the age of 17, and Ellis Genge putting team-mates at ease by moving from table to table at lunch.
You couldn’t call this schmoozing by Borthwick – not from a man whose caved-in schnozzle represents years of commitment in the hurt arena of the pack. But he is aware of the need for faith from England supporters whose freshest memory of the team was seeing them roundly spanked by South Africa in November and yet were far from unanimous in wanting Jones out, given his excellent overall record of results and history with the World Cup.
