The fingerprints of Trump’s political guru are all over the attack on Brazil’s Congress by Jair Bolsonaro’s supporters – and there could be much more to come ✍️ michael2day

Bannon’s appearance before the 6 January committee would have been desirable. Lest we forget, Bannon declared in a broadcast the day before the Capitol was ransacked: “All hell is going to break loose tomorrow. It’s all converging, and now we’re on, as they say, the point of attack. I’ll tell you this: It’s not going to happen like you think it’s going to happen.Last weekend, two years on, it was Brazilians’ turn for a shock.

After Donald Trump lost the 2020 US presidential election, Bannon spewed doubts and conspiracy theories about voter fraud. He has sought to undermine the October 2022 Brazilianin the same way, his vehemence no doubt fanned by his confident but incorrect prediction that far-right rabble-rouser Bolsonaro would win re-election.

Carvalho says: “What happened in Brasilia was like what happened in Washington, but worse, in a sense, because they attacked the Congress, the presidential palace and the courts – all the key institutions of my democracy.” He then attempted to turn a sprawling old monastery in Trisulti, east of Rome, into the headquarters for a European network of finishing schools for the far-right. This proved a step too far. In September, Italy’s Supreme Court of Cassation backed the Italian culture ministry’s move to keep the medieval building in the hands of Italians rather than right-wing revolutionaries.
