Dr. Mackey has been in touch with officials in both school systems since the vote as they navigate the path ahead, which is complicated even more due to a loss of federal funding that came in during the COVID pandemic.

In Autauga County , over 60% of voters rejected a property tax increase that would have sent an estimated $7 million annually to public schools .

In Marengo County, while a tax renewal passed for Demopolis City Schools, a new tax that would have benefitted Marengo County schools an estimated $3 million annually failed by just 26 votes. “We‘re always concerned when we see tax votes fail because tax votes come to the people because there’s a need for that locally,” said Alabama State Superintendent of Education Dr. Eric Mackey.

Dr. Mackey has been in touch with officials in both school systems since the vote as they navigate the path ahead. It’s complicated even more due to a loss of federal funding that came in during the COVID pandemic. “Both of them are going to be losing hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal funding because of the ESSER funds that have dried up,” Dr. Mackey warned. “There’s no question they will have to reduce services, which could include looking at closing and consolidating some schools.”That may also mean less teachers and reduced funding for extracurricular programs like athletics and the arts.
