The Autauga County jail remains closed four months after it was shut down due to health concerns.
) - Sheriff Mark Harrell arranged to move more than 150 inmates out of the county jail.When black mold was found in the air conditioning system, the sheriff says he called on the County Commission. He says inmates and staff were at risk, and he had no choice but to close it. Harrell says documents prove problems existed long before he was appointed in January 2023, but they went unaddressed.
“I just asked that the County Commission be more open with me of the process that’s going on and what steps they’re taking in order to remediate this so I feel comfortable bringing people back into that jail because I’m not going to bring anybody back into that jail until I know it’s safe,” Harrell said.
“Within three to four hours, once a person is arrested, if they’re not able to bond out, then we shift them off to another agency, another sheriff’s office, another county jail somewhere And so far, the process has worked,” Harrell said. “Our kitchen is shut down also. So made a process where we can cook for them, we can feed them while they’re here. And so the process is working.
Until the bid is awarded and work begins, Kramer says it is difficult give an exact timeline or cost, or to even share how it will be funded.
