According to the latest Power On newsletter by Mark Gurman, the haptic buttons for the iPhone have been delayed by one year.
has backtracked due to the additional costs of adding such a feature as well as the complexity of designing, manufacturing, and engineering the haptic buttons for the compatible iPhone 15 models. He also cites concerns about integrating the necessary software as a reason to scrap the haptic buttons this year.
The Bloomberg scribe adds that inside Apple, test units continue to sport the haptic buttons. While the company is still deciding what to do, Gurman says that it seems that the new touch-friendly buttons have been removed from production models.
Based on renders, the haptic button would be one long single bar on the side of the iPhone. The user would tap the top part of the button to raise the volume and the lower part to decrease the volume. When the button is pressed, the user would get a haptic response to simulate the pressing of a button.
