director Bong Joon-ho, in the midst of accepting South Korea’s first Academy Award for Best International Feature, quipped “Once you overcome the 1-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.” Giving a complete overview of international cinema is impossible for any program, but SMU’s selections include some fascinating projects that give insight into their respective cultures. Kicking off the festival is a screening of the Columbian drama, which served as the nation’s official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 82nd Academy Awards. The road-adventure film ties in with much of the country’s musical heritage and served as a breakout for director Ciro Guerra.
