University of Texas at Austin President Jay Hartzell will step down from the flagship this spring to serve as the next leader of Southern Methodist University, he announced Tuesday. Hartzell's decision is a massive shakeup in public higher education , as he now leaves a vacancy at one of the most prestigious and influential schools in the state.
A Longhorn himself, he has spent almost 30 years at the university: After earning his doctorate in finance from the flagship, Hartzell returned as faculty in 2001 and became dean of the McCombs School of Business in 2016. Though his first year in the top office coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, most of his tenure will be marked by the school's rising prestige among national universities.
