Jon Johnson The way Slocomb piled on the points at the end of last season is something coach Paul McLean hopes will carry over into this year. The RedTops averaged 30.4 points per game down the stretch, but gave up 50.
2 as well, which accounts for the 3-7 record. Still, McLean is plenty excited about what Slocomb brings to the table offensively and certainly hopes the defense can improve. Gone is standout quarterback Cade Birge, a three-year starter, but junior Weston Sasser is a talented player ready to take over that role. “Weston is going to be our guy,” McLean said. “He was back-up to Cade last year and he’s had a really good spring and really good summer. “He’s a junior, but he’s never started varsity . He’s always done really good in JV and he’s starting to develop leadership. He’s more of a passer.”“We’re really excited about Hayes Hatton , Luke Goodman , Brody Keel , Dustin Owens … those guys really got a lot of playing time the last couple of years,” McLean said. “I feel like if we can keep them all healthy, they should be able to produce. Last year we won three games and we lost three games where we scored 38, 31, and 41 points.”“He was our second leading tackler last year,” McLean said. “We moved Brody Keel down from safety to linebacker. Also, we’re a lot bigger up front. Our defensive ends, Connor Sessions and Zane Denham, have looked really good throughout the summer. “Our interior is a lot bigger with Carter Garrett and Jaylen Reynolds. Both of them are over 300-pound kids and that’s something we haven’t had in years – just some size.”“Chris has never played football until this year,” McLean said. “He came out in the spring and is a soccer kid. He’s coming along pretty good.”“Four years ago we were starting true freshmen on the offensive line against Andalusia and Catholic,” McLean said. “They’re seniors now, so they’ve been through the battles and paid their dues. I’m hoping it correlates to a bigger season.”“We made a leadership council this year,” McLean said. “Usually we let the kids pick the captains, but the coaches picked the leadership group this year and that group consists of several juniors and seniors. “Luke Goodman has really stepped up and shown a lot of leadership. Zane Denham has shown a lot of leadership. Kenyarte Lee started last year as a sophomore. Brody Keel is stepping up and showing a lot of leadership. “Last year everybody was looking to Cade to make a play. Now, it’s more spread out – there are four or five guys stepping up and being more vocal.”“I feel like if we can stay healthy … I feel like they’ve bought in and can compete now,” McLean said. “They’ve been through the battles. “When they were younger, they were intimidated. Our region is still really tough. If we can stay in the battles, I think we can compete with the majority in our region.”>>2024 record: 3-7 overall, 1-6 in Class 4A, Region 2 >>2024 results: New Brockton ; at Wicksburg # ; at Houston Academy # ; at Trinity # ; Geneva ; Northside Methodist # ; Montgomery Academy # ; Alabama Christian # ; at Prattville Christian # ; Geneva County >>Returning offensive starters : C Kenyorta Lee ; RG Zane Denham ; LG Conner Sessions ; RB Hayes Hatton ; WR Luke Goodman ; WR Brody Keel ; Dustin Owens >>Returning defensive starters : DE Conner Sessions ; LB Dylan Owens ; LB Brody Keel ; DB Luke Goodman Sept. 19 Trinity #Oct. 17 at Alabama Christian #Jon Johnson is sports editor of the Dothan Eagle and can be reached at jjohnson@dothaneagle.com or 334.712.7965.
