Alaska Earthquake Center said it is in the area of Endicott Arm, which is south of Juneau.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A significant landslide fell into water in Southeast Alaska Sunday morning around 5:30 a.m. And the Alaska Earthquake Center said evidence suggests it triggered a one-foot tsunami.

The agency said has not heard any reports of injuries or damage. It has not yet been able to pinpoint a more exact location. Scientists looked at data from seismic stations, which pick of movement from landslides. “The location and volume might be a little bit off because of where this is located because we don’t have a lot of stations to the West because it’s close to the border,” Ezgi Karasozen, a research seismologist with the Alaska Earthquake Center said. The agency said this afternoon it is working with other agencies to understand what happened and to get a more exact location. The landslide was described as “several tens of millions of cubic meters” that struck the water, according to the Alaska Earthquake Center. This comes just days after the agency expanded a monitoring project to catch and study things just like this. For a few years, it has had a monitoring system in Barry Arm, which is home to a large landslide that could create a tall and deadly tsunami.“We know that there are lots of reports by lots of other agencies that Barry Arm is not the only landslide we should be concerned about. There is a lot of slopes that are similar to Barry Arm size, or maybe smaller, but is experiencing the same kind of glacier retreats and kind of like slowly moving. That’s why we’re actually concerned,” she said. “Barry Arm was our starting point. It’s been monitored very heavily too. There are lots of instruments. So, we can actually learn a lot from that, but also it was obvious that we need to expand this to be able to detect, cover a larger area to be able to detect the other landslides happening,” Karasozen said. She said Sunday’s landslide and tsunami were outside of the newly expanded area, but it’s the kind of thing they are looking to monitor, and the area could be in the next expansion. “This is probably a good motivation to do that,” she said. “We just need to make sure that this version is stable and working good in real time, and then we’ll think about how to do it.”Security guard quits over dispute about moving fan in wheelchair closer to Jelly Roll stageDHS contract worker charged in 3-year-old’s hot car death doesn’t show up for courtPetition to relist gray whales as an endangered species filed, population ‘lowest since the 1970s’
