A massive sinkhole opened up in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, displacing a family and prompting concerns among residents. Borough officials, working closely with PennDOT, are addressing the situation, but the extent of the damage and the timeline for repairs remain uncertain.

Distressing photos showcase a massive sinkhole that erupted outside a couple's residence on South Queen Street in Shippensburg , Pennsylvania , compelling them to abandon their home. This unsettling incident has prompted numerous families in the vicinity to seek guidance on their next steps. In a statement to CBS 21, the Shippensburg Borough manager shed light on the situation.

The evacuation of the buildings involved a collaborative effort between the manager, the duplex owner, the Shippensburg Fire chief, and the borough's code enforcement officer. They determined, after careful assessment, that evacuating the two families residing in the duplex was crucial to safeguarding human lives. \To further address the situation, a structural engineer will meticulously examine homes along South Queen Street to ascertain any potential structural vulnerabilities. Expressing the borough's profound empathy for those affected by the damage, the manager emphasized that the incident is particularly disheartening given the current frigid temperatures. While the extent of the damage to the residences suggests a substantial repair undertaking, the manager clarified that the borough's sole responsibility lies in repairing the road in conjunction with PennDOT. Concerning the damage to the homes themselves, the manager stated that the onus rests on the property owner and the respective renter's insurance policies. \The property owner of the duplex has arranged for an insurance adjuster to evaluate the sinkhole-induced damage. However, the move-in date for displaced residents remains contingent upon the insurance adjuster's findings. It is uncertain when individuals can return to their homes or retrieve their belongings until a thorough assessment is completed. The manager disclosed that PennDOT is actively involved in the cleanup efforts due to the road's status as a state highway. So far, the sinkhole has been temporarily filled with cold asphalt, as mandated by PennDOT. A permanent solution involving hot mix asphalt is scheduled for application in May or June to ensure the structural integrity of the repair. The manager highlighted that Snoke's Excavating & Paving played a crucial role in filling the sinkhole, providing the necessary manpower, expertise, and equipment. \ The manager further informed CBS 21 that the borough has maintained constant communication with PennDOT, who have affirmed that all actions taken by the borough have been entirely appropriate. When inquired about preventative measures to avert future sinkhole occurrences, the manager expressed that predicting sinkhole locations and timing is virtually impossible. Currently, the paramount priority remains repairing the existing sinkhole(s). The manager stated that they are actively investigating the possibility of additional sinkholes outside of the one near 15 and 17 South Queen Street. The Shippensburg Borough urges anyone who detects concerning structural damage to their home due to the sinkhole or suspects the existence of other sinkholes within the borough to contact the borough office promptly. Residents are also advised to reach out to their respective renter's insurance providers and property owners
