Simu Liu Supports Casting Melissa Barrera To Replace Gal Gadot As The DCU's Wonder Woman
The DC Universe will bring a new star for the Wonder Woman movie that is currently in the works. As Gal Gadot's time with the character ended after the conclusion of the DCEU movie timeline, Diana Prince is getting reimagined for James Gunn's franchise.
Over the years, Melissa Barrera has emerged as a popular casting choice for the DCU's Wonder Woman, and a fellow superhero star is in agreement. During an interview with Joblo, Shang-Chi actor Simu Liu shared how he thinks she would be great for the role, after having worked together on The Copenhagen Test. He shared, "James Gunn or anybody else out there, I think she really pushes herself." Liu elaborated, saying, "There were a couple of moments during stunt training where I was like ‘That’s Wonder Woman-esque.’ I don’t know who’s watching or listening to this interview but I just think she’s a total badass." In an interview with A Shot Magazine in April 2025, Barrera directly addressed her fan-casting as Wonder Woman in the DCU. At the time, she stated that "A friend that told me that. He's on Twitter. I haven't been on Twitter in a really long time, but he told me a year ago or something like that. I was like, 'Oh interesting.' I think it's nice because of what the character represents." She added that DC Studios hadn't contacted her about it, saying, "Of course not!" when she was asked by the outlet. Barrera shared the following about the potential of being cast as the next Diana in live-action: Melissa Barrera: I think whoever gets the role, I just hope that they can embody the essence of the character because I think that those movies, whether they're Marvel or DC, their reach is so big. And because those artists that get those roles will inevitably get a built-in fanbase and have the eyes and the ears of so many people, I think that it would be nice if they did something actually positive with the influence that they have to at least be a good example of the kind of human being that you wanna be in the world, instead of just using it for self-serving purposes. A director has yet to be hired for the DCU's Wonder Woman movie, but it has a screenwriter attached who is no stranger to Gunn's franchise. Ana Nogueira, who wrote the script for Milly Alcock's Supergirl, which releases this summer, has been tapped to pen the screenplay for Diana's reboot. While Wonder Woman hasn't been cast yet, she did show up briefly in the DCU's Chapter 1:"Gods and Monsters" through animation on Creature Commandos. Other actors who have also expressed interest in the major role include Frida Gustavsson and Adria Arjona.
