A serious severe weather threat is on the table for the South this week – here's what you need to know:
Tornadoes, destructive winds and large hail are all potential threats.to get weekday updates from The Weather Channel and our meteorologists.
Here's a breakdown of the timing and the threats you can expect from severe weather over the next few days.A few severe storms could erupt from northern Texas into Oklahoma, western Kansas and southwest Nebraska. Damaging wind gusts would be the primary threat, but an isolated tornado or two is possible. The risk of dangerous severe weather will increase in the South, especially from eastern Texas to southern Arkansas, Louisiana and western and southern Mississippi.
Damaging winds and a few tornadoes are possible from southeastern Louisiana into southern Mississippi, southern Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.Heavy rainfall could cause flash flooding from the northern Gulf Coast to as far north as the Tennessee Valley, northern Georgia and the southern Appalachians. The tail end of the cold front might produce one more day of severe weather from much of western, central and northern Florida into southern Georgia and far southern South Carolina.
Wintertime outbreaks often occur when excessive Gulf of Mexico heat and humidity swarms over the South while the strengthened cool season jet stream blows ahead of winter storms. These severe weather outbreaks are most common from Texas to Florida, but bursts of heat can bring the risk of nasty weather into parts of the Midwest.
