This January is likely to be one of the driest on record at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, but Mother Nature is planning some changes for the upcoming weekend. There might even be a rain-snow mix in the greater Seattle area between Saturday night and Monday. Keep an eye on the forecast because things could change rapidly. \For this morning, we are watching for patchy freezing fog in parts of the South Sound.
Drivers should be aware of slick spots on roads, especially on bridges and overpasses. Sidewalks could also be icy. Visibility will gradually improve throughout the morning. Otherwise, we are expecting abundant sunshine today with highs in the mid to upper 40s. There won't be any major issues over the mountains today, but Blewett and Stevens Passes could have icy patches. An Air Stagnation Advisory is in effect for much of Central and Eastern Washington due to the calm weather. \ Tomorrow, the freezing fog could be more widespread in the morning. That will be followed by lovely, cool sunshine. Thursday will be cloudier, though mostly dry for most of Puget Sound. Friday brings back wet and active weather. It will be breezy with lowland rain and mountain snow. Traveling over the passes could be difficult at times into the weekend with daily rounds of snow. There's a small chance for a rain/snow mix on Saturday night to Sunday morning and again on Sunday night to Monday morning. It's still too early to determine exact impacts, timing, and potential snow totals. However, it doesn't look like a major – or even moderate – event. The bottom line: there may be pockets of minor lowland snow. We'll get a clearer picture of what to expect by Thursday and Friday. Stay tuned!
