A beautiful forecast is expected this Memorial Day weekend. With that comes lots of crowds headed outside. He is beating the Memorial Day crowds by getting outside for a hike on Thursday.
“We'll do an occasional day hike, a little bit longer than a couple hours,” Hill said. “In that case, we will bring some snacks, or a picnic or something like that.”Search and rescue crews said they are active all year round so they can keep people like Chris safe. “People who have been locked up all winter are going to want to get out and enjoy this beautiful weather and the mountains that we have in our own backyards,” said Wayne Bassham, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Public Information Officer.“We are always staying on top of what we need to for those different types of seasons, we have all four seasons here in Utah.”Crews have been training by doing fitness tests, hiking Mount Olympus, and practicing swift water rescues.
“You can’t just show up at Mount Olympus with a couple of bottles of water and not be drinking water all day,” Bassham said. “You’re going to go through those first two bottles within the first hour.”As for this weekend, Bassham said crews are ready in case any calls come in. He added that they are ready at all times.
“It's just one of those things where you just roll the dice and say we are going to get called out this weekend. Based on the amount of people that go in those canyons, we're talking about 5,000 people a day, the odds are, something could possibly happen.”“It definitely makes me feel safer going out, especially in more remote areas,” Hill said. “Certainly thankful that there are more people around to help you and assist you if something goes wrong.
