Scream 7 burning house with Ghostface in the clouds
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Scream 7!Scream 7 has no shortage of Easter eggs, but the best one actually comes in the sequel's very first scene. Like the case with most legacy sequels, the last few Scream movies have had no shortage of callbacks and fun references to past movies in the franchise.
Scream 7 doesn't shy away from nostalgia, which makes sense based on who is involved in the movie. In addition to bringing back Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, Scream 7's returning cast also features Matthew Lillard as Stu Macher, or at least a version of his character. Previously, Lillard voiced Stab 8's Ghostface seen in 2022's Scream, while also providing his voice for the Wes Craven tribute. Granted, Lillard actually appeared in a much earlier sequel, which gets a reference at the start of Scream 7. Stu's Sighting At Windsor College Is Mentioned At The Start Of Scream 7 In typical Scream fashion, Scream 7 begins with an epic opening kill sequence. This time around, the sequence features Scott , a Stab fanatic, and his less-enthused girlfriend, Madison , visiting the Macher house, which has since been turned into an Airbnb. Before they even arrive at the house, Stu gets a very interesting mention. When driving up to the infamous house at 216 Turner Lane, Scott and Madison gear up for their big getaway by listening to something in their car that mentions someone matching Stu Macher's description being seen at Windsor College in 1997. Though the mention is quick, the rest of the opening kill sequence, including Scott, makes an effort to suggest that Stu is still alive. Related All 26 Scream Franchise Easter Eggs & References In Scream 7 Scream 7 cleverly uses Easter eggs to call back to previous movies, rewarding longtime fans with subtle plot points and thrilling references. Posts 8 By Richard Craig The Windsor College Easter egg, however, is actually more of a fun meta reference involving Matthew Lillard and his sneaky Scream 2 appearance. Stu Being At Windsor Is Actually A Meta Reference To Matthew Lillard's Scream 2 Cameo Even though Stu Macher was killed by Sidney at the end of the original Scream movie, Matthew Lillard technically returned in 1997's Scream 2, but he wasn't playing Stu. When Sidney and her friends attended the party at Delta Lambda Zeta, Lillard could be briefly seen in the background interacting with Timothy Olyphant's Mickey. The uncredited cameo went on to help fuel the theory that Stu was still alive in the Scream franchise, but in reality, Lillard's quick uncredited cameo had nothing to do with Stu. Instead, he was just a random partygoer with bleach-blond hair. When speaking to ScreenRant's Ash Crossan as part of the"Going Method" series, Lillard spoke about visiting the Scream 2 set and confirmed the cameo was actually Wes Craven's idea. Check out the clip from the episode below: With the sighting being mentioned in Scream 7, the latest sequel cleverly makes a meta reference to Lillard's quick Scream 2 cameo. It also pokes fun at the"Stu is alive" theory, since Lillard's appearance in 1997 is often used as evidence to support the idea that he was still alive and followed Sidney to Windsor with a new look to go unnoticed. How Stu's Windsor Easter Egg Feeds Into Scream 7's Biggest Mystery Following the fun callback to Matthew Lillard's Scream 2 appearance, Scream 7 leans into the notion that Stu could be alive. Before the movie made its debut, it was confirmed that Lillard would reprise his role in some form. Throughout the sequel, a version of Stu appears, terrorizing Sidney through video calls. Ethan Embry's Marco also attempts to convince Sidney and Gale that Stu was staying at Fallbrook Psychiatric Hospital. By Scream 7's ending, the real characters portraying Ghostface are uncovered, and it's not Stu or anyone directly connected to him. Instead, Marco reveals that he recreated a present-day Stu using AI and deepfake technology. While Scream 7 considered an alternate ending that brought back Stu for real, there may never be a true end to the theories suggesting Stu is alive. 16 6.6/10 3/10 Scream 7 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed R Horror Mystery Release Date February 27, 2026 Runtime 114 Minutes Director Kevin Williamson Writers Kevin Williamson, Guy Busick, James Vanderbilt Producers William Sherak, Paul Neinstein Cast See All
