The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation says the extra costs signify the underfunding of education in the province.

Education Minister Dustin Duncan said Monday the money is for school divisions that incurred extra costs because they needed to hire additional substitute teachers and staff to cover those who were sick and unable to work.

He said while it’s good the government has recognized some schools are facing a shortfall, this highlights the need for better funding. “We get into situations like this where we don’t have that cushion,” he said. “We don’t have that stable, consistent and predictable funding that allows us to do longer term planning and put some money aside for unforeseen circumstances. We don’t have that luxury.”

Maze said inadequate budgets cause stress for school employees, adding that the system is already stressed.
