Sarah Michelle Gellar at the premiere of I Know What You Did Last Summer
Hulu canceled the Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series, but Sarah Michelle Gellar has now lined up a new project. Gellar was set to reprise her iconic role of Buffy Summers in the revival and was an executive producer.
She starred in a pilot episode directed by Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao and written by Lilla and Nora Zuckerman that featured Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the new Slayer. Gellar's central involvement and the other talent assembled created a great deal of anticipation, leaving fans stunned and disappointed after it was announced that Hulu was not moving forward with the show. According to Variety, Gellar has now been cast in the upcoming action-comedy movie Stop That Train, where she will play herself. The film is about two train stewardesses, Tess and DeeDee who work on the Glamazonian Express, a high-speed train that is in danger of being derailed by the disastrous Stormaganza. Tess and Deedee must collaborate with President Gagwell and entitled first class passengers to save the day. After being originally scheduled for May 29, it will be coming to theaters on June 12 instead. In addition to Gellar, Minj, Jujubee, and RuPaul, Stop That Train's cast includes Raven-Symone, Nicole Richie, Brooke Lynn Hytes, Latrice Royale, Marcia Marcia Marcia, Monét X Change, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Joel McHale, Michelle Visage, Chris Parnell, Charo, Natasha Leggero, and Drew Droege. It is directed by Adam Shankman and produced by World of Wonder, the same production company behind RuPaul's Drag Race. Stop That Train is not the first time that Gellar has played herself in a movie or show, with one notable instance of this being The Big Bang Theory series finale. Even though the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended in 2003, Gellar has remained a pop culture icon. This has been further solidified by her portrayals of Daphne Blake in the live-action Scooby-Doo movies, Helen Shivers in I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Kathryn Merteuil in Cruel Intentions. She also made an impact on the Star Wars universe by voicing the Inquisitor known as the Seventh Sister in Star Wars Rebels, where her real-life husband Freddie Prinze Jr. voiced Jedi Kanan Jarrus. More recently, Gellar reprised the role of Helen in 2025's I Know What You Did Last Summer, along with playing Tanya Martin in Dexter: Original Sin and Ursula Danforth in Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, the last of which she was in the midst of promoting when she received the news about the Buffy the Vampire Slayer's sequel cancellation. She is also voicing one of the main characters in the upcoming Tubi animated series Breaking Bear alongside Brendan Fraser, Annie Murphy, Josh Gad, Elizabeth Hurley, and Gabbi Kosmidis. Hulu's decision to scrap the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival means that audiences will not be getting to see Sarah Michelle Gellar play the beloved character again anytime soon, but Stop That Train will be giving viewers a chance to see her playing her iconic self in a comedic film.
