San Marcos City Council voted to transfer responsibility of its regional animal shelter to Hays County and operate its own local shelter on Tuesday, August 20.
San Marcos will continue its interlocal agreement with Hays County for another 2 years but will shift responsibility of the regional shelter to Hays County by late 2026. San Marcos will operate its own local shelter instead, according to the interlocal agreement document. “We are coming to the end,” Carr said during the August 20th city council meeting. “This isn’t a negotiation anymore. This is, we are getting out of the business, and this is what we need for us so that we can survive.”
