Five days after a catastrophic mid-air collision between an American Airlines jet and an Army helicopter, salvage crews have successfully removed a significant portion of the damaged aircraft from the Potomac River. The operation, which is expected to continue for several days, aims to retrieve the remaining wreckage, including the helicopter. The crash, which occurred over Washington D.C. on Wednesday, resulted in the tragic loss of 67 lives.

Salvage crews have removed a large portion of a commercial jet from the Potomac River near Washington’s Reagan National Airport on Monday, five days after a midair collision last week that killed 67 people. Authorities have said the operation to remove the plane will take several days and they will then work to remove the military helicopter involved in the crash. The crash between the American Airlines jet and an Army helicopter over Washington D.C. on Wednesday was the deadliest U.S.

air disaster since 2001. 55 of the 67 people killed in the crash. Washington, D.C., Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly has said they are confident all will be found. Crews early Monday could be seen aboard a vessel with a crane working to lift pieces of the aircraft. On the ground, investigators continue to search for debris and evidence to determine the cause of the crash.
