A PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet collided with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter in mid-air while approaching Runway 33 at Reagan Washington National Airport around 9 p.m. local time. The PSA flight, operating as Flight 5342 for American Airlines, had departed from Wichita, Kansas. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will jointly investigate the incident, with the NTSB taking the lead.

Shortly after the collision, multiple calls reporting the aircraft crash above the Potomac River were received. DC Fire and EMS, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), and various partner agencies immediately launched a coordinated search and rescue operation in the Potomac River. As of yet, there is no confirmed information regarding casualties.Reagan National Airport (DCA) temporarily halted all takeoffs and landings in response to the incident. Emergency personnel were deployed to the airfield, while the terminal remained open to passengers. The MPD confirmed that their helicopter was not involved in the collision and is actively assisting in the multi-agency response efforts. Fireboats were also dispatched to the scene near the Potomac River, where the small aircraft is believed to have crashed
