A male driver sustained serious injuries after his car went over the side of the Arlington Memorial Bridge into the Potomac River during a snowstorm Thursday night. Divers rescued him and he was transported to a hospital.
A man sustained serious, life-threatening injuries on Thursday night after his car plunged off a bridge in Washington, DC, into the frigid Potomac River during a snowstorm. The incident occurred just before 7 p.m. on the Arlington Memorial Bridge when the driver was involved in a collision with another vehicle. His car then careened over the bridge's side railing and into the water. DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene, and divers swiftly extracted the man from his submerged vehicle.
He was brought to shore and immediately provided with advanced life support before being transported to a hospital. Divers conducted three thorough searches of the submerged car and confirmed that there were no additional occupants inside. Efforts to recover the vehicle from the river will be postponed until Friday morning due to the ongoing snowfall and deteriorating weather conditions. Two people inside the other vehicle involved in the crash sustained minor injuries. One of them was transported to a hospital for treatment. That vehicle remained on the bridge. The Arlington Memorial Bridge, a significant commuting route connecting the National Mall in Washington, DC, to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, remains closed overnight.
