A Royal Caribbean cruise ship currently sailing through the Caribbean Islands is grappling with a gastrointestinal illness outbreak, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ). The Radiance of the Seas, a cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean, has seen nearly 100 passengers and crew members fall ill. The affected individuals are being confined to their cabins to prevent further spread of the illness.
The cruise ship embarked on its seven-day voyage from Tampa, Florida, on Saturday, February 1st, with an anticipated return to Tampa on Saturday, February 8th. The CDC reported on Wednesday that 91 passengers and crew members had reported symptoms, primarily diarrhea and vomiting. Two of the afflicted individuals are members of the ship's crew. Royal Caribbean is obliged to report instances of passenger-related medical illnesses, and the company has taken several steps to mitigate the outbreak. These measures include enhanced sanitation protocols, isolation of affected individuals, and increased communication with passengers and crew. According to the CDC, this marks the sixth illness outbreak on a cruise ship in 2025. The agency has offered additional guidance on maintaining health during cruises. While the precise cause of the outbreak remains unknown, the CDC suspects norovirus, a common culprit of gastrointestinal illness on cruise ships. Confirmation awaits the receipt of stool or vomitus samples from the affected passengers. In a statement to FOX 13 News, a Royal Caribbean Group spokesperson emphasized the company's commitment to passenger and crew well-being, stating that 'enhanced measures have been implemented onboard in an abundance of caution to protect the health and comfort of all our guests and crew.' Royal Caribbean also points to the comprehensive medical services available on their ships, including 'limited professional medical services through licensed (international or domestic) physicians and nurses,' and 'shipboard medical facilities' equipped to meet or exceed industry standards
