Eighty-nine passengers and two crew members aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship returning to Tampa, Florida, on Saturday experienced gastrointestinal illness symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ). The outbreak was reported to the CDC 's vessel sanitation program on Tuesday. Those affected have reported diarrhea and vomiting. At present, the CDC states that the cause of the illness remains unknown.

'Enhanced measures have been implemented onboard in an abundance of caution to protect the health and comfort of all our guests and crew,' the cruise line stated. The CDC confirmed that ill passengers and crew were isolated from others, and 'increased cleaning and disinfection procedures' were put in place. Eighty-nine passengers and two crew members have experienced gastrointestinal illness symptoms on Royal Caribbean's Radiance of the Seas cruise ship. Cruise ships are required to report gastrointestinal illnesses to the CDC, as noted by the agency. 'Cases reported are totals for the entire voyage,' the CDC's website states. 'It does not mean all people are sick at the same time, such as when they arrive or leave a port or ship.' While Norovirus is 'often a cause of gastrointestinal illness outbreaks on cruise ships,' the CDC emphasizes that determining the cause 'can take time.'
