Governor McKee addresses the state's preparations for a significant winter storm expected Sunday. RIDOT, Rhode Island Energy, and other state agencies are taking measures to ensure public safety and minimize disruption.

Governor McKee announced that the Rhode Island Department of Transportation ( RIDOT ) is preparing for a significant winter storm expected to hit the state on Sunday. McKee stated that RIDOT will have its crews on duty well in advance of the storm, with 200 state trucks and over 250 vendor trucks ready to address road conditions. The state also has 50,000 tons of salt available, which has already been pre-treated on roads.

In addition, Rhode Island Energy has extra crews on standby in case of power outages related to the storm. The governor outlined the anticipated snowfall, stating that it will likely reach 5 to 9 inches across the northern half of Rhode Island and Bristol County, Massachusetts, with 3 to 6 inches along the South Coast. Snowfall is expected to be heaviest from midnight to 3 a.m. early Sunday morning and may mix with or change to sleet from Providence southward after 3 a.m., resulting in reduced accumulations in those areas. Precipitation is expected to end around 10 a.m. Sunday morning, with partly sunny skies in the afternoon. Roads are anticipated to be clear by Sunday evening, in time for Super Bowl parties.Regarding energy supplies, McKee noted that the state's Office of Energy Resources is in constant communication with Rhode Island Energy and fuel terminals to monitor the storm's potential impact. For those who may need temporary shelter during the storm, the Department of Housing will provide additional overnight capacity at several warming hubs across the state, accessible on a drop-in basis without referrals. These locations include: West Warwick Convention Center, Woonsocket, Emmanuel House in Providence, and OpenDoors in Pawtucket. McKee also emphasized the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency's close coordination with municipalities statewide and the Rhode Island State Police's deployment of additional troopers to monitor highways and assist motorists. The governor concluded his update by sharing safety tips from the Rhode Island Department of Health. These include checking in on older individuals, shoveling snow safely to avoid overexertion, staying hydrated, dressing warmly, warming up muscles before shoveling, avoiding lifting excessive amounts of snow, pushing snow instead of throwing it, recognizing signs of fatigue or discomfort, and taking steps to prevent slips and falls by de-icing walkways
