Rhode Island Governor McKee assures residents of state preparedness for a major winter storm bringing heavy snow and potential disruptions. He highlights the state's resources, including pre-treated roads, snow removal equipment, and standby energy crews. Governor McKee also details expected snowfall amounts and advises on warming centers and safety precautions for residents.

Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee addressed the state ahead of a significant winter storm expected to bring heavy snow and potential travel disruptions. McKee emphasized the state's preparedness, stating that the Rhode Island Department of Transportation ( RIDOT ) would have crews on standby well before the storm's arrival. RIDOT boasts 200 state trucks and over 250 vendor trucks, ready to tackle snow removal.

Additionally, the state has secured 50,000 tons of salt, pre-treating roads in anticipation of the storm's impact.McKee further assured the public that Rhode Island Energy has extra crews prepared to respond to any potential power outages caused by the storm. The governor provided details on the expected snowfall, forecasting 5 to 9 inches across northern Rhode Island and Bristol County, Massachusetts, while the South Coast anticipates 3 to 6 inches. The heaviest snowfall is projected between midnight and 3 a.m. early Sunday morning, with a transition to sleet or mixed precipitation from Providence southward after 3 a.m., reducing snowfall accumulation in those areas. Precipitation is expected to cease around 10 a.m. Sunday morning, with partly sunny skies anticipated for the afternoon. The governor addressed concerns about heating homes by stating that the state's Office of Energy Resources is actively monitoring energy supplies in collaboration with Rhode Island Energy and fuel terminals. To ensure the safety of those who might otherwise be vulnerable to the cold, the Department of Housing will provide additional overnight capacity at designated warming hubs, accessible on a drop-in basis, requiring no referral. These hubs include the West Warwick Convention Center and the Woonsocket warming center. Additionally, existing overnight shelters like Emmanuel House and OpenDoors in Providence and Pawtucket, respectively, will expand their capacity on a drop-in basis. To further bolster preparedness, the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency is in constant communication with municipalities statewide. The Rhode Island State Police will deploy extra troopers to monitor highways and assist motorists in need. The governor also shared safety tips from the Rhode Island Department of Health, including checking on elderly individuals, shoveling snow safely, staying hydrated, and dressing warmly.
