Governor McKee announces state-wide preparedness measures for impending winter storm, emphasizing safety precautions and resources available to residents.
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee announced that the state is prepared for a winter storm expected to hit the region starting Saturday night. McKee emphasized that the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has mobilized its crews and equipment in advance. RIDOT has 200 state trucks and over 250 vendor trucks ready, along with 50,000 tons of salt pre-treated on the roads. The governor also stated that R.I.
Energy has additional crews on standby to address any potential power outages caused by the storm. The National Weather Service predicts significant snowfall, with 5 to 9 inches expected in the northern half of Rhode Island and Bristol County, Massachusetts, and 3 to 6 inches along the south coast. Snowfall is anticipated to begin Saturday night and intensify from midnight to 3 a.m. on Sunday. After 3 a.m., snow is likely to mix with or transition into sleet, reducing snowfall amounts towards the south coast. Precipitation is expected to cease around 10 a.m. Sunday, with partly sunny skies in the afternoon. Roads are anticipated to be clear by Sunday evening, allowing for safe travel to Super Bowl gatherings.Governor McKee assured residents that the state is actively monitoring the storm's potential impact on energy supplies. The Office of Energy Resources is in close communication with R.I. Energy and fuel terminals to ensure a stable energy supply. To provide shelter for individuals who may be vulnerable to the cold, the Department of Housing will open additional overnight warming hubs. These hubs include the West Warwick Convention Center, Woonsocket's 356 Clinton Street location, and existing shelters like Emmanuel House and OpenDoors, all of which are expanding their capacity on a drop-in basis. Governor McKee also highlighted the state police's deployment of extra troopers to monitor highways and assist motorists in distress. He urged residents to check on elderly individuals, shovel snow safely, and take precautions to prevent slips and falls
