Extraordinary vocal soloists and no-holds-barred playing wow audience
On Saturday evening at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, the world dissolved into ashes and celestial trumpets summoned the dead from their graves.
Cano’s low notes were creamy, her solo in “Liber scriptus” heartfelt and direct. Her upper range was solid and effective. The Master Chorale injected the wild “Dies irae” and “Rex tremendae” with operatic passion. Their unaccompanied singing in the “Libera me” was appropriately delicate. However, throughout the evening I frequently had difficulty hearing the text clearly enunciated.
There was lovely playing from the bassoons and clarinets, especially in the sparsely scored “Quid sum miser” with Valentin Martchev’s quiet, somber bassoon tone and legato phrasing well featured. Oboist Sarah Skuster’s solo in the “Ingemisco” was plaintive.
