The Dallas Symphony Orchestra is off to a great start in its new season.The program paired two late 19th-century works, exploring romantic impulses and heroic gestures.scenes from Cervantes’ classic novel about an avid reader of romances who deludes himself that he’s a knight. A solo cello and viola respectively portray the Don and his sidekick, Sancho Panza, on their comic adventures.
Vogler had an excellent counterpart in the DSO’s principal viola Meredith Kufchak. She gave vivid expression to the role of Panza, by turns delightfully chatty and cheerfully rustic. Her chocolatey tone, tinged with sweetness, mixed pleasantlyVogler and Luisi have a history with this piece, recording it together in the aughts. They had obvious chemistry — Vogler often smiled at Luisi — and shared musical sensibilities.
Together they brought out the theatric nature of the score with daring tempo changes. The orchestra mainly stuck with them, but there were some coordination issues that likely will be improved in the subsequent performance. Luisi and the orchestra took a similarly dramatic approach in Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony. Conducting without a baton, Luisi sculpted shapely phrases with his hands, pushing tempos ahead and lingering before important downbeats, stretched up on his tippy-toes. The musicians were again challenged to stay with him, and there were some uncertain moments, but the results were often thrilling.
