Rebecca Ferguson in Mercy
This year has been a gift for sci-fi fans with numerous exciting projects on their way. Fans are currently swooning over Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary, which has become a worldwide sensation. June will bring Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, whose trailer has already got fans theorizing about various aspects, and December will bring the highly anticipated Dune: Part Three, which is expected to close the year and the franchise with a bang.
So, sci-fi fans have an interesting year and multiple reasons to go to the theaters. Another notable sci-fi entry this year is Rebecca Ferguson and Chris Pratt’s Mercy, which presents the timely concept of artificial intelligence. Directed by Timur Bekmambetov, the feature divided audiences and critics on Rotten Tomatoes with an 82% and a 25% score, respectively. The movie further flopped at the box office, failing to even recover its $60 million budget, grossing only $54.3 million worldwide. But nowadays, box office returns aren't the only parameter of a film's success, as streaming can breathe new life into a concept when it becomes easily available at home. And Mercy is an instant streaming hit, despite having tough competition. Dropped recently on Amazon Prime, Mercy is the #1 movie globally on the streamer, as per FlixPatrol. The film has dethroned Prime Video's original swashbuckling adventure, The Bluff, starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Karl Urban, which has maintained a top spot since its arrival on the platform. Posts By Macklen Makhloghi Is 'Mercy' Worth Your Time? Yes, if you like good mysteries. Mercy follows Pratt as a detective, Chris Raven, who is accused of murdering his wife, and must prove his innocence to an AI judge . The film has credible performances from Kali Reis, Annabelle Wallis, Chris Sullivan, and Kylie Rogers. Collider’s Jeff Ewing notes in his review, “Pratt delivers a sufficiently admirable performance, while Ferguson is stellar as the AI judge.” Further adding: “Some of the twists move a little too quickly; even watching on a big screen leads blink-and-you'll-miss-them details flying by too quickly. There are also a few logical issues with various machinations and character plans, and the world only makes sense in the most superficial of ways. There are successful elements in the script, certainly, but there are also several frustrating moments that simply needed another draft to work the knots out. All that said, it's a successful foray into sci-fi territory thanks to a willingness to stretch the subgenre's established rules, making for a fun murder mystery that keeps audiences guessing.” 6 10 Mercy Like Follow Followed R Action Thriller Sci-Fi Release Date January 19, 2026 Runtime 100 minutes Director Timur Bekmambetov Writers Marco van Belle Producers Charles Roven, Majd Nassif, Robert Amidon, Timur Bekmambetov Cast See All
