I'm a Chinese-American journalist in Hong Kong, covering consumer tech in Asia. Before focusing on this exciting beat, I was a general culture writer and editor with bylines in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, New York Magazine, among others. Feel free to email me at bencsin@gmail.
. At the time, I wrote about how the phone offered performance that punches so much higher than its price class. And now, six years and somehow 11 more iterations later, we are at the Realme 13 series, and I’ve been testing the highest tier 13 Pro Plus for a few days.
The phone is once again a very, very good value. It’s priced at about the equivalent of $400 in its respective regions across Southeast Asia. For that price you get a 6.7-inch 120Hz OLED screen with thin bezels, glass front and back , and a triple lens camera system with a really good 50-megapixel main and 3X zoom cameras—the former with a 1/1.5-inch image sensor size, which is about on par with the sensor Samsung uses in its phones priced between $999 to $1,899 .
The phone feels great in the hand with curvy edges and corners all over, its 190g weight and 8.4mm thickness very modest by 2024 standards.I haven’t had the time to test the cameras too thoroughly yet, but I like what I see so far. The 3X telephoto lens captures great details, and you can pull off a credible 6X zoom using in-sensor crop.
For longer zoom, Realme uses its new AI image engine to digitally upscale the image. The results can be hit and miss — sometimes shots look very artificial — but if you have good lighting, results can be very impressive. The phone comes with a 5,200 mAh battery that can be charged at 80W speed with the included charger. There’s also a case in the box, so you’re really getting quite a lot for $400.Unfortunately, as is the case with Chinese phones, availability is spotty. The phone has launched in India, and will also sell in Southeast Asian regions like Thailand. But exact sales date is unclear. But the phone does support T-Mobile in the U.S. for Americans who are considering importing.
