I was dreading the bumpy experience of an unwieldy looking old plane that you had to board using a stepladder. I shouldn’t have.
But it’s not often that plane is a 1947 Grumman G-73 Mallard flying boat, particularly as there are only a few of the old aircraft still in use in the world.The world’s leading South Sea pearl producer, Paspaley Pearls, is headquartered in Broome, Western Australia, with a network of pearl farms stretching 2500 kilometres across north-west Australia.
I wasn’t entirely thrilled when I first heard that my transport from Kununurra to the ship was going to be via an unwieldy looking old plane that you had to board using a stepladder. The take-off was smooth. Soon we were up over farmland and green plantations. The landscape quickly reached upwards to lush tablelands atop red cliffs and rocky escarpments. It was more verdant than I thought it would be, with silvery rivers snaking in curves on the right side of the plane.
