DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -It is just one shoe store, but the closing of Rack Room shoes is the latest statement on Wiregrass Commons Mall. Signs outside the retailer revealed the planned shutdown will occur in a few days. Like other malls nationwide, the number of stores at Wiregrass Commons dwindled in recent years, with one anchor shutting down and dozens of smaller stores and eateries closing. However, there was no immediate word on why Rack Room is closing.
Once the heart of retail, malls, by and large, have fallen on hard times, as have other brick-and-mortar locations, with e-commerce capturing an increasingly more significant segment of the retail market.
