The quadrotor biplane will be used for emergency tasks, including delivering medical supplies, and locating trapped individuals.
In the wake of a coastal hurricane or a canyon-jumping wildfire, every second counts. Rescue is a game of extremes. There are either tiny drones that can see but can’t carry, or massive helicopters that can carry but cost a fortune to fly.
A team of aerospace engineers at Texas A&M University believes there is a better way. They call it QUEST.QUEST is a quadrotor biplane, which will be used for heavy-duty emergency tasks, including delivering medical supplies, locating trapped individuals, and firefighting.Dr. Moble Benedict and his Texas A&M engineering team, Team Harmony, are competing in the international GoAERO competition to develop QUEST, an autonomous aircraft designed to fill the critical gap between small search drones and expensive helicopters. The road to 2027The QUEST aircraft transitions from a vertical hover to high-speed cruise flight by tilting 90 degrees. It hovers like a drone for precision but tilts 90 degrees to fly like a fixed-wing aircraft for high-speed, efficient cruising. The ultimate goal is to create a vehicle capable of carrying heavy payloads — such as medical supplies or even people. If successful, it could make disaster relief more affordable and accessible. The innovative blueprint has already earned them global recognition, including a $10,000 prize and the NASA University Innovation Award. After proving the concept with subscale prototypes and securing an additional $40,000 in Stage 2 honors, the team is now scaling up. Their journey culminates in February 2027, when they will test a full-scale version under real-world conditions at the NASA Ames airfield Fly-Off.“There is a gap in emergency response vehicles. On one hand, you have helicopters, which are limited in number and expensive to operate. On the other, there are drones that are capable of search, but not rescue,” Benedict said. “GoAERO is trying to address this gap. You need something with serious payload-carrying capabilities that’s not as expensive or complex as a helicopter. It needs to be able to carry significant loads, such as critical supplies or even a person,” Benedict added.Digital twin for full-scale design As the team shifts to full-scale design, each member manages a vital technical pillar, such as hardware construction, autonomous systems, or flight dynamics.Scaling up from a small model to a full-sized quadrotor biplane is much riskier, so the team is building an exact digital replica first. This allows for simulating and fixing flight problems in a virtual world before the real aircraft ever takes its first flight.“We’ve had some experience working with a subscale aircraft, but now, all the risks increase when jumping to full-scale. One of my responsibilities will be coming up with an extremely accurate flight dynamics model so that we can be better prepared to fly this aircraft in real life,” said Reuben Stewart, part of the team. Supported by the WoodNext and Texas A&M Foundations, the physical build begins this spring. Beyond the technical engineering, the team remains focused on the big picture: a future where fleets of these aircraft save lives by delivering medical supplies, locating trapped survivors, and suppressing wildfires.
