) -Time is running out for the 2024 Alabama legislative session, but one lawmaker said her work isn’t done yet. State Representative Juandalynn Givan recently introduced a bill that makes weight discrimination in the workplace illegal.
She added that she’s had multiple people reach out to her, claiming they weren’t hired or they were fired simply because they are overweight.would allow those people to sue their employers if they believe they’ve been discriminated against regarding their weight and employment. Givan added that several state residents have contacted her stating that they were fired or weren’t hired simply because of their weight.
With the legislative session adjourning on May 20th, Givan said her goal right now is to get a conversation started about this problem. “Sometimes you have to try to get legislation moving so it begins a discussion and once the discussion begins,” Givan said. “When you bring it back the next year or even possibly the next year it’s more likely than not that you’re going to get the legislation out.”
